In this episode, we are joined by Chris Fortuin, a consultant on sports management, sports development, and facility management. Join us as he explores the historical perspective of apartheid and the modern era in democratic South Africa, examining the growth and development of women’s sport, the challenges it faces, the opportunities available, and how success can be measured.
Despite progress since 1994, women’s sport in South Africa still faces significant hurdles. Chris highlights these challenges, with one of the main ones being the Absence of Physical Education in Schools, as curriculum shifts toward academic priorities have reduced the time and resources allocated to physical education. As a result, many girls miss out on structured sporting development during crucial formative years.
He also explores other challenges, including limited grassroots programs, underdeveloped academies, unequal access, and slow professionalisation. This conversation will highlight not only the frustrations but also the strong hope that exists for the future of women’s sport in South Africa.
